When individuals or businesses set up a new website, they should focus on the steps they need to take to ensure their site is fully compliant. What do I need, I hear you ask? The short answer is: it depends on what the website does. However, certain compliance documents need to be covered regardless of which activities are undertaken via the website, as follows:

  • Terms and Conditions of Use: This document provides website users with information about how they can and can’t use the website and how they can access and use the content supplied via the website.
  • Privacy policy: The privacy policy is usually where we deal with issues relating to data protection or what is often referred to as GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation).
  • Accessibility policy: This provides further information about how users with special needs will be able to access and use the website to ensure compliance with The Equality Act.
  • Cookie policy: The Cookie policy gives users clear insight into the cookies (small pieces of software to be placed on a user’s hard drive as part of accessing a website) which will potentially be used and must be accepted as part of the user accessing and using the website.
  • Terms and Conditions of Business: This document is probably the one which is most specific to the particular website. This will set out the basis on which sales made via the website, whether that be sales of goods or sales of services, will be contracted, and these are the key areas for any consumer website.
