Hamlins advises Racing Past Media on F1 content partnership with the Tate Collection

Hamlins has advised Racing Past Media (RPM) on its content partnership with The Tate Collection, one of the world’s leading curated archives of Formula 1 colour film.

The collection, spanning the 1950s and 1960s, often described as the ‘golden era’ of Grand Prix racing, is now exclusively available for commercial licence via RPM, with iconic footage accessible through its media hub.

Racing Past Media

RPM’s mission is to preserve archival motorsport footage, making historic Formula 1 content available to both research and entertainment audiences. Its co-founders – Steve Rider, Richard Wiseman, Malcolm Clinton and Alex Roger – share a rich pedigree in sports journalism and award-winning documentary making, with a commitment to compile the best possible collection of broadcast and film content reflecting the first 30 years of the Formula One World Championship.

The partnership

Hamlins supported RPM in structuring and negotiating the multi-year partnership, including a suite of publishing and distribution agreements, and securing exclusive rights to commercialise the archive.

The arrangement also introduces a bespoke commercial framework designed to support a long-term relationship between the parties.

This partnership represents a significant development in the motorsport media space, establishing a new content and licensing model for historic Formula 1 footage.

RPM co-founder Steve Rider said, “We’re delighted to have the Tate Collection join us as part of the Racing Past Media project and we will work hard to make sure that this wonderful footage reaches the wider audience that it so richly deserves.”

“The project has the potential to occupy a significant space in a highly lucrative and competitive global sport. Therefore, we needed the best legal advice and solid contractual support if we were to progress in the Formula One environment. Not only did we find that in Hamlins, but we also found knowledge of the sport and its politics, and a great enthusiasm for what we are trying to do. Hamlins will undoubtedly be the key to the success of Racing Past Media”
