About Julian

Julian is a Consultant in our Media and Entertainment team.

During a 45-year career, focusing principally on music and publishing matters, Julian has represented an impressive roll call of leading British and international artists, authors and literary estates. In addition, he has represented the industry side, including two global majors and many independent recording and music publishing companies, alongside book publishers and literary agencies. He is sought after for his strategic and tactical advice as well as his negotiating skills.

Julian has provided expert opinions on some of the highest-profile disputes of the last 30 years, working closely with leading counsel, and he has appeared as an expert witness in ground breaking cases.

Before joining Hamlins, Julian was a founding partner of media and entertainment law firm, Swan Turton where he spent 20 years. This was preceded by 20 years at The Simkins Partnership, where he headed the music and publishing groups and served as one of the firm’s managing partners.

Julian was previously President of the International Association of Entertainment Lawyers and a UK founder of Adlaw, a global network of law firms specialising in advertising and marketing. This contributed to his  extensive network of domestic and international legal and business contacts.

He is fluent in German and has in depth knowledge of the Europe-wide music industry.

He has published widely and spoken at domestic and international conferences and seminars throughout his career.

Julian enjoyed 15 seconds of international fame when he announced to the world on behalf of Geri Halliwell that she was leaving the Spice Girls.
