We were joined by Stuart Pearce, one of the best-known faces in English football at our breakfast event on 21st November. As well as his long-playing record, Stuart managed Manchester City and has been a head coach for England’s football squad. He also coached the Great Britain Squad at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Stuart told us that from an early age he realised the one thing that he had which stood him apart was his grit. Grit is the determination to focus on your dream plus the stamina it takes to get you there. He shared the audience a number of anecdotes including how his old manager Brian Clough motivated him when he was picked for the England squad for the first time. Brian asked Stuart “was he good enough to play for England” which left Stuart feeling like he wanted to prove to Brian that he was capable of playing and wanted to make a success out of it. Stuart used this example to explain in order to motivate your team you need to understand them. “You can’t motivate someone you don’t know.” By knowing what would motivate Stuart, Brian knew the right thing to say in order to push him forward.
Stuart also told the audience some of his business lessons including remembering that success doesn’t happen overnight. At the Euro 96 match against Spain, Stuart said that the penalty he scored took a year in the making. “You have to do a lot behind the scenes before you get the 10 seconds of fame. You might have to do the work for years and not get the opportunity but you know in your mind you’ve done the work.”
