Alex Cochrane and Ellen Gallagher have joined the thriving Hamlins media team as Senior Associate and Associate respectively in order to further grow the firm’s ever-increasing presence in the defamation and privacy arena and build on our reputation management offering to clients. These hires follow on from the high-profile appointment of Partner Callum Galbraith last year.
Previously, Alex was at Brett Wilson, a specialist media and litigation law firm. He is recognised as a leading media disputes and reputation management lawyer with considerable experience in defamation, privacy and harassment claims. Ellen previously worked at niche media and entertainment firm Russells Solicitors. She is a skilled commercial dispute resolution/litigation lawyer with extensive experience of advising clients on a variety of issues in the entertainment, media and sports sectors.
Our media team is at the forefront of taking legal action for privacy, libel and breaches of data protection and the right to be forgotten. We focus on preventing damage through early engagement with the media, and working closely to prevent information spreading. Other recent high-profile cases include claims against Channel 5 for breach of privacy during the filming of TV programme Can’t Pay We’ll Take it Away.
The Hamlins media team has been bolstered by a flurry of client wins in the phone hacking arena. At the beginning of April, the Court lifted the stay on further phone hacking claims against News Group Newspapers. It is expected that there will be at least 90 claimants in this next wave against the News Group Newspapers. Hamlins has already issued 13 claims and has many more in the pipeline.
Head of Media Christopher Hutchings said, “The addition of Alex and Ellen will significantly reinforce our media litigation offering. Our media team has grown steadily over recent years to meet the ever-increasing workflow into the team. Our track record of excellence in high-profile privacy and defamation actions means we have a long and impressive client list which includes celebrities, leading business people and politicians”.
